Spot the Social Control Issues

Lots of grist for your sociological mill in this memo sent around today: space and boundaries, medicalization, law vs. norms, norms about how to respond to norm violations, controller selecting norms, ...

Mills Community,

As we settle into our fall schedules, concerns about secondhand smoke are being raised to Public Safety and Facilities.  Mills College has a Smoking Policy that is directed at compliance to existing laws as well as common courtesy.

In order to protect the health and safety of all members of the Mills College community, smoking is prohibited:

  • In enclosed public places including
    Publish Post
classrooms, auditoriums, theaters (except when a production is being presented that includes smoking), lecture halls, conference and meeting rooms, gymnasiums, museums or galleries, libraries, the Bookstore, hallways of buildings, public rest rooms, reception areas, elevators, and any room that functions as a place of meeting or public assembly,
  • Within 30 feet of any building entrance or building air intake vent or window,
  • In College-owned vehicles, including golf carts, and,
  • At outdoor public events and places of assembly, such as Adams Plaza.
Mills community members are expected to voluntarily observe these prohibitions.

Campus community members who are bothered by another person's smoking shall advise the smoker of their concerns in a non-offensive and respectful manner.   It is reasonable to expect that adjustments can be worked out collegially at Mills.  Any incidents not able to be amicably resolved should be addressed with the event sponsor or governing body (e.g., Student/Residential Life, Employee Resources.)

Smoking cessation programs and resource assistance are available to students through the Student Health Center.  Faculty and staff may contact their health plan for information on available resources.  Additional help may be available to faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program, for more information employees should contact Lissa Palanca in Employee Services at lpalanca@mills.edu.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation with one another on this important matter.
